Kart: Green Storming Ahead in Mülsen / Calleja Holds Advantage in OK
Reportagem: FIA Karting

A packed day of heats in Germany has ended with Green and Calleja ahead in Junior and OK as the charge for the championship continues. Following an update to today's timetable a total of 28 heats were packed into the schedule today as the German crowd were treated to non-stop action around the 14 corners of the Motorsportarena Mülsen.

Despite gloomy forecasts, after the morning drizzle departed, a dry track came to life with the steady run of heats shaping the grids ahead of tomorrow's finals.

In OK, William Calleja narrowly held his advantage to end the day equal on points with Zac Drummond in the provisional standings. Meanwhile, the Junior championship has been brought to life as Will Green delivered a remarkable run of perfect heat wins to place momentum firmly with the championship leader.

In Academy Senior, polesitter Kayol hovered around the top places after beginning on pole position this morning, but nothing could stop an impressive Albie Lapper who has found incredible pace in Mülsen and starts tomorrow's final on pole position.

Noah Baglin's chances of seizing the title this weekend have been handed a heavy blow this evening as he sits in 23rd position ahead of tomorrow's super heats and final. Baglin steadily recovered from a disappointing qualifying yesterday but after the championship leader faced penalties in his last heat, he will have a mountain to climb if he were to leave Mülsen with the European title tomorrow

Polesitter William Calleja started his day without any real challenge. The Australian driver has seemingly nailed his setup this weekend as he cruised to the chequered flag in his opening heats leaving the likes of Pesl and Arias without any real opportunity to pounce.

Calleja's final heat of the day started shakily as the Australian lost places in the opening laps which effectively handed Drummond provisional pole position for tomorrow but Calleja fought back in the closing stages of the heat to climb back into third position, enough to equalise with Drummond on points and clinch the super heat pole.

Zac Drummond, who currently sits in second in the championship standings, consistently delivered during his heats to bank classification points. After cruising to victory in his first heat yesterday, two wins and a few top five finishes were enough for the Scottish driver to start on the front row for the super heats tomorrow morning.

Fellow championship contender Niklas Schaufler initially had a shaky start to his day as he navigated the wet conditions but the Austrian expertly controlled his kart following an early spin to display why he is still in contention for the title this year. As the track dried, Schaufler's day came to life as he picked up multiple heat wins including one at the expense of home hero Luke Kornder. He ends the day in fifth place in the standings while Kornder is hoping he will be able to build upon his final heat win this evening which leaves him in sixth place when he races in front of his home crowd tomorrow.

Asher Ochstein started the day well as he comfortably held on to his pole position during his opening heat before he faced Dean Hoogendoorn during his second heat who promptly took the lead and eventual heat win. As soon as Hoogendoorn led the morning heat on lap two, incredibly Tomasz Cichoracki emerged as a contender at the front after starting in 20th spot and briefly led the heat. Cichoracki couldn't maintain position but stunned the grandstands with the drive of the day to cross the line having gained 15 places.

Viktor Gustafsson travelled to Germany fresh from his last lap drama during the KZ final in Genk to make his mark as a wildcard OK entry. Gustafsson banked a steady number of midfield finishes to end the day on 153 points and in 15th spot.

Finally, Valerio Viapiana made solid progress throughout today's running after having qualified in 74th spot yesterday. Last year's runner-up in the OK-Junior World Championship gained 15 spots in his first heat, 9 in his second, 12 in his third and 15 in his fourth and final heat.

The provisional OK classification after Saturday's heats is as follows:

1. William Calleja (AUS, Parolin) 226 points
2. Zac Drummond (GBR, Fusion) 226 points
3. Dean Hoogendoorn (NED, Parolin) 220 points
4. Asher Ochstein (USA, CRG) 198 points
5. Niklas Schaufler (AUT, DPK Racing) 193 points

The first heat of the day saw the championship leaders go head-to-head as Daniel Miron Lorente and Will Green tussled over 10 laps in what will likely be a preview of the remaining races of the championship.

Green ultimately prevailed as the Brit achieved a faultless run of heats that leaves him on a perfect 250 points and in pole position for the super heats tomorrow. Green's masterful performance so far this weekend gives him the edge as the championship approaches its closing stages but with a super heat and race tomorrow and a final round in Kristianstad, all is still to play for.

Miron Lorente was the first to lose out against Green who found pace in the wet to build a six second gap and overtake Polesitter Samczyk to begin his run of heat wins. Miron Lorente was subsequently disqualified from his first heat for a driving conduct violation before attempting to bounce back during his second heat. The Spaniard held position until the closing laps when Alex Molota this time successfully challenged Miron Lorente to claim the heat win. Miron Lorente ended the day with a final heat win and in eighth position in the standings.

Polesitter Remigiusz Samczyk started his day well to comfortably protect his position only to lose out to Will Green later and subsequently struggle in his third and fourth heat as the Polish driver's performance began to drop off. Niccolò Perico also faced a more challenging Saturday, losing places across his heats, but his opening two heats yesterday afternoon keep him in contention in fifth position.

Santiago Diaz De La Vega has quietly emerged as a frontrunner this weekend, steadily building upon his fifth-place qualifying result and heat win yesterday. The Mexican placed in the top five across his four heats today including two second place finishes leaving the driver with a healthy 212 points and second position in the standings to take both junior super heat pole positions for KR Motorsport.

Oliver Spencer delivered an exceptional heat performance this morning to climb 15 places to take the chequered flag ahead of Girardello and Perico who fell back to eighth spot after starting on pole. Priam Bruno managed to clinch a heat win and Leon Chelidze also impressed after gaining 20 places to take a fourth position during a dramatic and thrilling afternoon heat.

The provisional Junior classification after Saturday's heats is as follows:

1. Will Green (GBR, KR) 250 points
2. Santiago Diaz De La Vega (MEX, KR) 212 points
3. Priam Bruno (BEL, VictoryLane) 209 points
4. Alex Molota (SVK, Hagemann Racing) 197 points
5. Niccolò Perico (ITA, KR) 196 points

Sarp Kayol started on another drying track this morning which suited him during qualifying yesterday. However, after missing his braking point as he reached the first corner of his opening lap, the driver from Türkiye lost places with Filip Planeta taking the lead and a surging Jan Rodrigues piling the pressure onto Kayol.

The polesitter clung on to second spot during his first heat, a positive result for the young driver who recovered from his first corner misstep. However, a penalty in his second heat and a charge from Alex Desario to take a heat win this evening ended the polesitter's hopes of starting tomorrow's final on the front row.

Albie Lapper got off to a flying start this morning as the British entry refused to let his qualifying performance dampen his weekend. After starting his morning heat in eighth spot he quickly manoeuvred into the lead, overtaking previous race winner Genolet who settled for second spot. Lapper repeated his performance this afternoon overtaking Genolet, Carr and Jercan to put him on pole position for tomorrow's final.

Genolet was later handed three separate penalties after his afternoon heat, knocking his chances of securing back-to-back victories in the Academy Trophy, though his final heat win pulled him back into contention, earning him fifth spot on tomorrow's grid.

Ioan Tudor Jercan from Romania secured a heat win this afternoon with a six-place gain whilst Oliver Hjordrup from Denmark also navigated the conditions well to gain 13 spots this morning after starting from the back of the grid.

Leonie Her came into her own today in Germany as she picked up places throughout the heats, including a third-place heat finish with only a final heat retirement denting her hopes of a top grid position.

Simba Motoda, who performed so strongly during the qualifying heats in Valencia to convert his 15th place in qualifying to third on the final grid, had a less positive start to his run of heats after spinning on the damp track during his morning running and falling back this afternoon to leave him with ground to gain if he is to swing into contention this weekend.

The grid for Sunday's Academy Senior Final is as follows:

1. Albert Lapper (United Kingdom) 136 points
2. Filip Planeta (Czech Republic) 129 points
3. Alex Desario (Italy) 125 points
4. Ioan Tudor Jercan (Romania) 120 points
5. Alexis Genolet (Switzerland) 116 points
