Kart: after nail-biting finish / Van Walstijn is crowned FIA World Champion in KZ
Reportagem: FIA Karting Media

The World Championship event in Franciacorta will undoubtedly remain one of the most memorable FIA Karting events of recent years. All the ingredients were there: ideal weather conditions for the season in northern Italy, a magnificent field of 250 drivers, non-stop action on the track, a large audience around the track and watching the live stream, and superb organisation masterfully led by the Franciacorta Karting Track team. Three drivers enjoyed a great first. Dutchman Senna Van Walstijn won the Mondokart.com FIA Karting World Championship - KZ, Maksim Orlov dominated the FIA Karting World Cup - KZ2 and Angelo Lombardo held off Davide Fore in the FIA Karting International Super Cup - KZ2 Masters.

KZ: Senna Van Walstijn finally achieves his goal

Lorenzo Travisanutto (ITA) secured a place on the front row of the Final by winning Super Heat A on Sunday morning ahead of David Trefilov (GER). Already leading the Qualifying Heats, Trefilov retained first place. Reigning World Champion Giuseppe Palomba (ITA) won Super Heat B and moved up to fifth place behind Senna Van Walstijn (NED) and Riccardo Longhi (ITA). In the Final, Trefilov got off to a perfect start, but a collision in the third corner caused several favourites to crash. Palomba (ITA) ended up off the track and retired, while Riccardo Longhi (ITA) and Alessio Lorandi (ITA) crashed to the back of the pack, losing any chance of a good result.

Van Walstijn immediately set off in pursuit of Trefilov, with Viktor Gustafsson (SWE) in his wake, having moved up four places during the first lap. Emilien Denner (FRA) also got off to a good start but found himself under pressure from Travisanutto, who had been delayed in the first-lap incident. The positions continued to change as the laps went by, but not in the right direction for the leader Trefilov. The German first lost out to Van Walstijn, then to Gustafsson, before retiring after a collision with Travisanutto. After a spectacular start to the race from 11th place, Danilo Albanese (ITA) overtook Denner and settled into third place for the rest of the race. The podium positions remained unchanged in the final laps: FIA Karting World and European Vice-Champion in 2024, Senna Van Walstijn finally clinched the supreme title of Mondokart.com FIA Karting World Champion - KZ at the age of 22. Gustafsson and Albanese secured second and third places. The final part of the Final was marked by the comeback of Stan Pex (NLD) to fourth place ahead of Denner and Pedro Hiltbrand (ESP), who set the fastest lap.

Thanks to Van Walstijn's victory, Sodikart won the FIA Karting team title ahead of Birelart Racing and Formula K SRP Factory Team.

KZ2: Maksim Orlov reigns supreme in Lombardy

After securing pole position, a flawless performance in the Qualifying Heats and victory in Super Heat A, Maksim Orlov knew that everything was looking good. But when the red lights went out and the 36 finalists set off, Maximilian Schleimer (GER) surprised his team-mate and rival, having won Super Heat B in the morning. However, it took Orlov just two laps to regain his lead. The leader then set a series of fastest laps to finish more than four seconds ahead. Already dominant in the European Championship, it was logical Orlov won the FIA Karting World Cup.

For Schleimer, on the other hand, the situation became more complicated. First, Timo Jüngling (GBR) passed him for second, before Noah Wolfe (GBR) found an opening in the 20th of 24 laps to complete the podium at the expense of the German driver. Marek Skrivan (CZE) flirted with the podium in the first part of the race, before having to resist a comeback from Jayden Thien (NED) and Daniel Macia (ESP) to save a place in the top five.

Already assured of victory in the FIA Karting Team Championship, CPB Sport confirmed its success ahead of Birelart Racing and Formula K SRP Factory Team.

KZ2 Masters: Lombardo wins head-to-head with Fore

Sunday began with the expected victories of Angelo Lombardo (ITA) in Super Heat A and Davide Fore (ITA) in Super Heat B. The clash between the two Italians promised to be intense. But contrary to predictions, the result of the Final for drivers aged 35 and over was much clearer than expected. For the top seven, the first lap standings were the same as the finish. Lombardo got off to an excellent start from pole position. The 2023 winner, Davide Fore, spared no effort, but was unable to get into a position to overtake despite a gap that rarely exceeded two tenths of a second! Fore ended up setting the fastest lap of the race with 45.745, but Lombardo drove at an equally fast pace and maintained his lead.

Crowned European KZ2 Champion in 2009, Lombardo has now regained a prestigious FIA Karting title with this International KZ2 Masters Super Cup. Anthony Abbasse surprised Riccardo Nalon (ITA) at the start to move into third position. Although he was unable to challenge the two leaders, the Frenchman had to stay strong to hold off Nalon, who was busy keeping Manuel Cozzagio (ITA) behind him. Luciano Medeghini (ITA) and Rasmus Haugard (DEN), who got off to a great start, finished the final in sixth and seventh positions, while Alessio La Martina (ITA) came back to eighth after a difficult first lap.

Lombardo's victory enabled Maranello Kart to win the FIA Karting team title ahead of IPK Factory Team and Birelart Racing.
