Kart: Republic kicks off the season with domination at La Conca
Reportagem: KartCom Selection

The five-round WSK Super Master Series commenced at La Conca at the weekend after an ever-shorter Christmas break, so we can get an initial idea of the drivers and teams to watch this season. The latest CIK-FIA chassis homologation period has started and some factories have made bigger changes to their equipment than others.

Kart Republic really did hit the ground running with wins in all six categories, from Mini U10 to KZ2, with a variety of teams, showing that Dino Chiesa's brand has taken on a reputation of versatility that is hard to argue against for busy teams. Koski Motorsport is the latest to make the switch, winning with American Michael McGaughy in OK-Junior, but we also saw his compatriot Josh Bergman win in Mini U10 (Kidix), Nicolo Perico (Team Driver) in Mini Gr. 3, another American Lucas Palacio (KR Motorsport) in OKN-Junior, Zac Drummond (Fusion) in OK and Stan Pex (SP Motorsport) in KZ2. All of those drivers used IAME engines apart from Pex, who used TM.

We also saw some drivers quickly adapt to KR chassis after making the switch over the winter, including Drummond and Dries Van Langendonck, 3rd in OK with Prema.

Overall, KR supplied over 30% of the chassis racing and took 60% of the podiums. It was the most popular brand at La Conca, with Parolin second, but OTK moves ahead of Parolin if you add together Tony Kart, Exprit, LN and Gillard. In KZ2 however, Pex and Marijn Kremers (Tony Kart / Vortex) in 2nd were some of only a few drivers not using the Sodikart chassis.

Of course, the conditions of an early-season race at La Conca are unique, in terms of the weather, the track layout and surface, and the composition of the field. Some major players didn't make the trip to Puglia - factories like CRG, IPK and Birel ART preferred to spend a few more precious weeks working on their equipment, while Vice World Champion Joe Turney was also absent from OK. We will learn more at Round 2 at Sarno on 5th-9th February.
