Kart: Emil Hernandez takes on new challenges in Italy
Reportagem: Emil Hernandez

Mexican kart driver Emiliano Hernandez Marun, better known as Emil Hernandez, made his OK-Junior debut in the WSK Super Master Series at La Conca this weekend (23rd-26th January) after gaining experience in the Mini and OKN-Junior categories in 2024. Joining the top Junior karting category for the first time is no easy task but Emil has already developed a strong dynamic with the VictoryLane team, helping him to perform on a circuit on which he has very little experience.

Emil started racing in Mexico during the pandemic (September 2020) and his talent soon outgrew the karts of the local racing academy. Once he had his own kart, he quickly rose through the Mexican national rankings and achieved his first national podium after an eyecatching last-lap battle from 5th to 3rd. Fittingly for someone with this level of competitive spirit, his favorites drivers are Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc, Ayrton Senna and Jonathan Thonon.

But Emil is keen to forge his own path in motorsport, now he is the 2024 Mexican champion in the Mini category, setting an impressive record of pole positions, race wins, lap records, fastest laps in finals, most laps led, most points obtained in a season - a complete record for his 2024 season in Mexico.

Emil competed in WSK in the Mini category in 2023 and 2024, coming close to the top ten of the highly competitive 60cc class, then moved up into the faster 125cc OKN-Junior category for the 2024 WSK Final Cup (where he qualified in the top ten in both races) to prepare for his 2025 OK-Junior campaign.

La Conca is in the far south of Italy and the weather was relatively warm for the time of year, at about 15°C, but often cloudy and windy. The circuit is renowned as the setting for spectacular racing in all categories.

Emil was ranked 18th out of 54 drivers in Qualifying on his KR / IAME machinery before heats where he was battling strongly in the pack. He crossed the line 12th in the Prefinal and qualified comfortably for the Final for the top 36 drivers of the weekend. He made up several places in the Final, lapping close to the pace of the leaders

"This first OK-Junior race has been a real highlight and I've already started to learn what I need to be a contender this year. I'd like to say a big thanks to VictoryLane, including Nicolas Martins, Aurelien Fath, Geoffrey, Thomas, Lazare, my mechanic Thomas Rodot, and to my driving coach Jonathan Thonon, as well as KR, IAME and KVS Racing."

"Of course I wouldn't be here without my partners Mobil, Stilo, LenCapital, AngelHub, Explorer School, AquilesMD, and S91, as well as my family, my school, my teachers, and all my coaches."

Emil will be in action again at Sarno for the second round of the WSK Super Master Series from 5th-9th February. Also will be competing in the full season of the Champions of the Future (COTF), the CIK FIA European Championship and the CIK FIA World Championship.
