Kart: the FIA Karting European season gets off to a great sporting start in Portimão
Reportagem: KartCom Selection

The choice of Portimão as the venue for the first round of the FIA Karting European Championship - OK and OK-Junior proved to be a wise one, especially as the Champions of the Future Euro Series had provided essential preparation opportunity two weeks earlier. It is undeniable that the hierarchy has progressed well since the numerous international races held at the beginning of the year. In very favourable weather conditions, the sporting confrontations were intense during the entire weekend. The show was exciting to follow from the Qualifying Heats onwards. The introduction of the Super Heats brought more selectivity without causing any dramatic turn of events. The rigour of the FIA Karting organisation brought additional fairness to the competition thanks to the effective collaboration between race control and the stewards. The tyres supplied by Vega in OK-Junior and MG in OK fulfilled their mission perfectly.

The statistics for the event revealed a numerical balance between the Tony Kart and KR chassis and a roughly equal split between the three engine manufacturers Vortex, TM Racing and IAME. In terms of performance, Tony Kart / Vortex achieved a hat-trick of wins in OK and 60% of the top 10 for OTK Kart Group. Behind two KR / IAME, Parolin / TM and Energy / TM were the outsiders.

In OK-Junior, the diversity was more significant. Another victory for Tony Kart / Vortex and three other OTK products in the top 10, as well as two Parolin / TM on the podium, two Energy / TM, one Sodi / TM and one Birel ART /TM in the top 10. The first KR / IAME was 12th.

The WARD Racing Team placed two drivers on the OK podium, while Koski Motorsport won the Junior category.

As far as the worldwide media coverage of an extra-sporting incident is concerned, Artem Severiukhin's gesture on the OK podium provoked an incredible number of reactions. As was the case after the sad Corberi case in Lonato, we can only regret that karting is making the headlines for the wrong reasons, when in fact it is an exciting sport that deserves a wider audience from true motor racing enthusiasts.

The Italian ASN, ACI, has just taken a position by withdrawing Severiukhin's licence.
